The Entire Crust can be Seismogenic: Evidence from Southern Malawi

چکیده

The Bilila-Mtakataka Fault (BMF), at the southern end of western branch East African Rift System (EARS), has been used in various scaling relation studies and arguments about strength lithosphere. We present evidence for a similar, though more degraded, frontal scarp on graben-bounding synthetic Chirobwe-Ntcheu (CNF), showing that this fault is active simultaneously with BMF. deployed 17 geophones ?60 days around Lake Malawi, across footwall hangingwall Continuous microseismicity can be seen from surface to ?35 km depth highlighting plane dipping ?42°E. Lower-crustal earthquakes have previously found EARS, based location focal mechanism hypothesized occur planes line up traces large faults. However, no previous study EARS revealed throughout crust shows seismicity along its full length base crust. Rather, lack mid-lower crustal depths, led some people “jelly sandwich” hypothesis. Our results show entire seismogenic, so support “crème brûlée” model. In our two month deployment we recorded 22 aftershocks ML ? 2 March 8th, 2018 earthquake 200 south array, 7 months after mainshock, confirming aftershock sequences regions low strain long duration, could main component slowly straining regions.

How large can the crust of a strange star be?

The effect of the magnetic field on the electrostatic potential of electrons inside and in close vicinity outside the quark surface of the star is studied. Depending on the value of the crust potential and the electron chemical potential at the base of the nuclear crust, we find that the strong surface magnetic field, 1.0 × 1014 ≤ H ≤ 3.0 × 1016 Gauss leads to a considerable reduction of the el...

Seismogenic properties of the crust inferred from recent studies of reservoir-induced seismicity – Application to Koyna

Recent studies of reservoir-induced seismicity have led to a better understanding of the seismogenic crust. These studies reveal that many parts of the seismogenic crust are critically stressed and small strength changes induced by reservoir impoundment can lead to seismicity. In the vicinity of the reservoir impoundment causes an immediate undrained response to the loading, and a delayed respo...

Attenuation models (QP and QS) in three dimensions of the southern California crust: Inferred fluid saturation at seismogenic depths

[1] We analyze high dynamic range waveform spectra to determine t* values for both P and S waves from earthquakes in southern California. We invert the t* values for threedimensional (3-D) frequency-independent QP and QS regional models of the crust. The models have 15 km horizontal grid spacing and an average vertical grid spacing of 4 km, down to 22 km depth, and extend from the U.S.-Mexico b...

Strange stars : how dense can their crust be ? ?

The strong electric field at the surface of a strange star is discussed, and a self-consistent model is proposed to calculate its capability of supporting a “normal” nuclear material crust. We find that the electric field is already not able to support the crust even when the bottom density of the crust is still considerably lower than the neutron drip point, which means that it is not the neutr...

Can community-based microfinance groups match savers with borrowers? Evidence from rural Malawi Can community-based microfinance groups match savers with borrowers? Evidence from rural Malawi

Village Savings and Loan Associations and Self-Help Groups have the features of both a borrowing and a savings technology. They may therefore bring together savers and borrowers, increasing financial intermediation in villages with low access to formal banking. On the other hand, such intermediation may be impeded by limited liability, or by broader social frictions. To test for evidence of int...
